Our Chess Story

Founded in 2024, we've been nurturing strategic minds and fostering chess excellence.

Chess Club History

Our Journey

The Colony High Chess Club was founded by Jonathan Gross and Aiden Moffat, both students from Colony High. What began as a small group of five friends meeting after school has grown into a club with many members from different backgrounds.

Over the past two years, we've earned two tournament wins — the Mat-Su High School Championships by Torin Erickson and the Mat-Su Chess Classic by Aiden Moffat. More importantly, we've created a community where students develop critical thinking skills and lifelong friendships.

We've raised strong players such as Aiden Moffat (ranked 7th in Alaska, USCF 1751), Landon Hoard (ranked 32nd, USCF 1444), and Torin Erickson (ranked 57th, USCF 1240).
